17 July 2010
Windmill Village

This short par 70 parkland course is another of the new venues for 2010.  It is part of the Windmill Village Hotel complex in Coventry and purports to offers a wonderful array of testing holes that challenge the lower handicapper but allows a more modest golfer the chance of a low score.  This probably means simply that its noddy, but on the day the intrepid haylofters turned up with an air of anticipation.

The hotel complex itself though thoroughly modern (about 20 yr old) purports to be steeped in tradition and history, records show there was a mill on the site as far back as 1510 and there has been a hostel on the site for almost 300 years. That’s when the original “Winde Mill House” was converted into a coaching inn. Legend has it that Dick Turpin, the infamous highwayman, stayed at the inn.

This means there must have been a place for him to tie up Black Bess which is
handy for the Bandits in the hayloft who will need somewhere to hobble their horses too.

On the day we were well looked after from  a decent cob in the Cellar bar to a fantastic Burger and Chips (more like wedges) in the Fairways Restaurant.

We were also greeted by the head professional and course designer who told us all about the courses Royal connections.  Well at least to King Edward, as the course had been a potato farm up until the mid 80s.

The  first 3 holes were par 3s which resulted in a slow start.  However given that all the par 4s on the course were very short we soon zipped round.  But make no mistake this is not noddy the greens are tricky and there is plenty of water and deep rough to keep you busy.
So how did it all pan out on the day?  Well, nearest the pin was the 160yd 13th, a tight little affair mastered by Les Halford.

Windmill Village was also the venue for the final of the KO Bowl and saw Carl victorious over Ian young.  The stewards will of course be reviewing the video evidence to see  if the Hooded Claw was up to any skullduggery to beat Fireman Sam.

The league event threw up few surprises, other than no Longest drive winner. A fight between JJ and Rob Jones for last place saw Rob with some new head gear.  2nd and third places were taken by T Mac and  Tom Henshaw respectively.  Whilst Justin (Windy) Miller, aptly, won the day with 37pts.
